Love and Compassion
There are many characters who show love and compassion throughout the book, The bishop and JVJ, Marius and Cosette, Eponine towards Marius, and Fantine to her daughter, Cosette. The longest abd most heart warming relationship is a father-daughter relationship between Jean and Cosette. after Fantine dies, jean Valjean goes to the Theonardiers to claim cosette. after Cosette is scolded by the thenardiers, JVJ gives Cosette a doll and, "Cosette looked upon the wonderful doll with a sort of terror. Her face still flooded with tears, but her eyes began to fill, like the sky in the breaking of the dawn, with strange radiations of joy...the stranger appeared to have his eyes full of tears. He seems to be at that stage of emotion which one does not speak in fear of weeping"(suplement #3).
Social Injustice
Social injustice is one of the most comon themes in Le Mis. The Thenardiers used Cosette as a paesonal slave, the Factory foreman kicked Fantine out of the factory in M__sir M___, ans reactions of people to the prisoner Jean Valjean. In the town at M___sir M__, Monseiur the mayor (Valjean) went to a cort case where Javert believed he cought the real Jean. an innocent garderner was harrassed in cort by being adressed as, "Prisoner," resumed the prosecuting atourney, in an austure tone, "give attention. ... it s evicent that your name is not Champmathieu, but you are convict Jean Valjean, disguised under the name, of first, of Jean Mathieu, wich was that of his mother..." (Les Misrables 84). Jean admits to being himself to save the pruner from an injust fate, and Flees M__sir M__.
Change and Transformation
Many times throught Les Mis, Jean Valjean changes. Usually his identity, but also his actions and emotions. inthe beginning of the novel, after being reformed by the bishop, Jean steald 40 suis from a young savoyard. in a live long attempt to repay the child, Jean Vajean, as Mayor of M___sir M____ calls, "A young savoryard, who was tramping about the country in search of chimnies to sweep, the mayor would send for him, ask his name, and give him money. (Hugo 55). he is trying to change himself into a caring man who is trying to pay off his past wrong doings.
Self-Sacrifice
Later on in the novel, Jean intercepts a letter for Cosette sent by Maruis. Jean needs a way into the barricade to find Marius. He adorns his National guard uniform and later, "At this moment, a fifth uniform dropped, as if from heaven, upon the others. Marius Raided his eyes and saw M. Frauchelevent. Jean Valjean just entered the barricade" (Hugo 307). Jean is practicaly sacraficing his life to observe Marius and understand the connection between him and Cosette.
Light and Dark/Shadows
Victor Hugo uses light and shadows to show many things. In the Bishop of D___'s house, he uses light to represent God. Later in the book Cosette Feels fear in the dark Forrest where Jean Valjean finds her. When Jean Valjean escapes into the convent with Cosette wile escaping Javert. In this scenario, darkness represented safety but it helped to build suspense like with Cosette in the forest like how an "uproar of demos receded, one would have said, a choir of angels approaghing in the darkness (Hugo 138). Light, however represents goodness and happiness.
Gardens
The book Les Mis portrays gardens as a safe haven for the caracters. once Jean, now ultimus Frachelevant and Cosette leave the convent, they move into a house with a large garden. Jean Tells Cosette, you never go there. i wish you walk in it,( Hugo 260). Jean wants Cosette to be safe and happy, eventhough Marius and Cosette kiss in the garden without him knowing. Jean however does not like to enter the garden, symblizing danger and vurnilability for his life style of a innocent escaping convict, but also for being with Cosette, who was safe in the garden.
